 Hill Climb 2009
A bit of a poor turn out for such a wonderful morning, although there were 3 more people than last years sole participant!
I think next year Im really going to push this event and even open it to youngsters on mtb. I might do some adverts in the schools etc.
Anyway, back to this year.
It was a bit chilly, but on the actual climb we knew we would warm up.....
5, 4 , 3, 2, 1.....GO
Mark Devine off first, From what I saw, a little "easy". I knew what was coming.
Me, Matthew Enticknap off next. I really hammered the first part of the course. This is the hardest part and I was really wheezing past the house on the left. I eased up a little to try and get my breath back but it would not return. I could see Mark infront but could not catch him.
Paul Hickman off next, I saw him finish strong.
Dave Thompson (Scarborough Super Hero) off last. He was like a steam train. Considering he rode two hill climbs after each other yesterday, he rode a really fast ride. I knew he would! I will have to check, but I think its a course record to boot.
1st. Dave "Tommo" Thompson - 3:37
2nd. Matthew Enticknap - 4:02
3rd. Paul Hickman - 4:08
4th. Mark Devine - 4:45
Nice one guys. Thanks Tommo for coming. Last Sunday in September for your hill climb you say.

That's right 2010 Sept 26th 11am Hackness is what's 'pencilled in'
Thx for a nice day out to a new HC for me. I'll be there again, I'll try and get some more riders out next year.

 Missed my chance.
My excuses for missing the HC were (i) I have a stinkin' cold and (ii) I was in Pickering for the WWII day - maybe that's where everyone else was. Certainly easier than riding up a steep hill. Pity I missed the HC as 5th place would have been my best HC placing in years! (Since 1984 I think).
Well done lads.

Thats more than just retro mate....
Did you dress up? Its always a right good day out. I used to be a volunteer on the railway and help out every year until cycling took over my life.

Bet your bike didn't look retro cycling round Malton this weekend. No candy coloured stripey flashy Merlins with razor blade seats skinny tyres and all those gears. Or where you in your plus 4's with flat cap on your fixie?

Wow. That was ace.
When we were racing in Cottingham this year, there were about 4 "Standards" racing around the route. My god they can shift aswell, we had gears and when they put the hammer down they were quite difficult to keep with. Nice.

Mmm, cannot understand it really, ....the times cannot be right??
I took off even my arm warmers, water bottle and even my phone and still seemed to be a bit sluggish?
Seriously, i did know what was coming and didnt set off too fast as i usually do that anyway but thought slow and steady wins the day, well it didnt but i could see maffers coming and decided not to look again and just hung in there until my head went light and could see Joan waiting to trip the watch on me but i am sure that she must have missed me as i 'sailed' past as i could not surely be over a minute down on that 'ole' lad from scarboro .
Good 'fun' tho ish, i will be back next year, thought that Mick etc would have come along to try and get me back for the flatland stuff, maybe another time eh??

 up hill
would have turned out to attempt to grab a late season revenge but I was doing `the Saltersgate gallows `on foot
So if you would like to improve your climbing ability come and have a go 10 more races this winter and no worries about damaging that expensive bike technology
you started off doing duathlon Mr Puffing so come and have a go

There are more races you say. When is the next one. Its good training for the 3 peaks. Would I get funny looks if I carried a bike up?

Pthhh , i went for a run when we went to Banburgh for the week last month as i was not allowed to take my bike. Rachel went first and came back telling me how far she had been so i went out and did a couple of miles more, even though i hadnt been for a run for a year and a half.
I could hardly climb the 3 stairs into the kitchen the next morning, needless to say i only went for one run
Will leave it to you little 'uns....

 fell racer
I`m sure there would be no objections to you carrying 20lb in a backpack but I think you might find the hills are a bit steeper than you are used to.
On Sunday we went down the steps into the railway valley by skelton tower more of a downhill than cyclocross!!!
the races are listed at nym.ac winter fell series

Sorry Tommo. You missed the course record by 10 seconds. (At the time of writing - over the last 3 years)
