 Reliability Ride 2010 - 17 January
Okay. The date is set for our first Reliability Ride.
Cost - £2
Route A - 60miles
Route B - 60K
Any ideas on routes? I will have a scan around the map and come up with a route if no-one else has any ideas. I think the two routes should be similar, then the longer one split away from the shorter one.
Do we need to inform the police. These are usually casual affairs (the ones that I have been on) where there are no signs or marshalls, you are simply given a route and sent on your way when you are ready. No massed start so there shouldn't be loads of riders on the road at the same time.
I thought we could use Netto car park. I will check if its okay, or even leave it up to those arriving in their cars to "sort themselves out".
HQ will be outside the Station - its now a tradition.

 reliability ride
No need to inform the police for this type of event.

I believe events like this need separate insurance. If I remember rightly, Clifton had to cancel theirs this year because they could not get insured. Do we have a contact at Clifton who could point us in the right direction?

 Insurance
Might be worth investigating this: http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/web/site/BC/lei/News2006/20061222_leisure_rides_2006.asp
It's possible to register a non-competitive cycling event with British Cycling that then gets the provision of Third Party and Public Liability insurance. Any event registered is covered by £10 million of insurance cover for ALL officials, and ALL participants.

If we are relying on CTC we need to check the terms of their insurance. If it does not cover reliability rides or the cover is insufficient for our purposes it would be worth registering with British Cycling. Who arranged membership of CTC and do they have a copy of the insurance policy or policy schedule?

I don't want to derail the serious issues in this post but can somebody enlighten me as to what is a reliability ride? I presume that most modern bikes will last the distance without falling to bits, well with the exception of those with campag on ??

You have to ride a set distance - in a set time.
Route A - 60miles
Route B - 60K
No times up yet ????

I think the set times thang is a bit of an oldies legacy.
Its now more like an organised club run with more people, hopefully about 50 ish from various local clubs.
More often than not, groups of riders form into equal ability riders naturally throughout the route.
The "reliability" used to test the reliability of the bike on untarmaced roads and your own map reading.

I have been in touch with Netto. All is okay and I have confirmed with a letter.
Ive not started advertising this one yet cos I need to know who to organise it with - British Cycling or the CTC.
Keith - is the club affiliated yet with the CTC?

Club is now CTC affiliated.
I have done a couple of routes, tell me what you think.
60K - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/60k-Reliability-Ride
60m - http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/60mile-Reliability
Ive made both routes the same apart from when the 60m splits away a goes around Church Houses and up Chimney.

Great but do CTC insure these events? If they do, on what terms? If the proper insurance is not there, I'll not be joining Malton Wheelers next year because I am not putting everything I own on the line. The rest of you need to think about this really carefully. No one wants a big claim against the club. If a claim sticks and there is no insurance all club members have to pay out ultimately to the extent of everything they own. I'm sorry, but there it is.

It sounds as though it does need carefully checking for the sake of the club.
On the route does the 60miler go up both Blakey Bank and Rosedale Chimney???

I thought we joined the CTC so that we could hold these events.
Keith has the CTC info if required. Ive not released any info into the outside world yet (apart from this Forum) so we can call it all if you want to, and be called - "Malton Wheelers - the club that doesn't put anything back into cycling"
Sometimes, I do feel as though Im p"ss"ng into the wind, I do try my best. There's always other clubs out there for me.
Yes, the route does go up both Blakey bank and Rosedale.

Ive had a chance to sleep on it now.
Chris, would you be kind enough and check out the CTC website re. Insurance.
Its no skin off my nose if we cancel, it will allow me to get out on the bike and not sat in a car park waiting for riders to turn up.
